OMG! I Almost Forgot Her Birthday
You’re sitting at your desk, reading the latest entertainment news and you get this twitchy little feeling in the back of your brain. Something was supposed to happen today or you were supposed to be somewhere, you’re not exactly sure, but it’s something. Shaking it off, you go back to the keyboard and go to the next story. But it won’t let up, this feeling of imminent doom, so you check your calendar to see if there is an appointment you are missing. Then you see it: your best friend’s name written at the bottom of this date, today’s date. OMG, it’s her birthday today and you’ve got nothin’. Luckily, it’s not too late. Here are some last minute best friend gift ideas that don’t look last minute, gifts you can put together quickly and easily.
Although it may seem an easy way out, gift cards are the quickest and easiest gifts for women. But the key here is presentation: no handing the card over in an envelope or even tucked into her birthday card. You can make it seem as if you really thought about her special day for weeks and came up with the perfect gift for your best friend, as opposed to running out on your lunch hour in panic mode and grabbing the first thing you saw that fit her. Or that didn’t fit her and she could exchange.
One idea is to get a gift card from her favorite store, box it up in a decent sized box. Wrap the card up in tissue paper, stuff the box and then wrap it like you would an actual purchase from that store. If it’s a specialty store that has printed boxes or a distinctive way of gift-wrapping, mimic their style.
You know what she likes: her hobbies, her favorite restaurants or musical tastes. If her favorite restaurant is that Mexican place where she gets great margaritas, a gift card for that restaurant dropped into a margarita glass with a bottle of good tequila makes a great gift presented perfectly. Not a drinker? How about that same gift card used as a bookmark in a cookbook; marking a page with a recipe for her favorite Mexican dish? If Chinese is her choice, it’s pretty easy to find one of those takeout containers and the card goes in there. That place doesn’t have gift cards? Either make up your own coupon and take her there yourself or get one of those generic credit card type gift cards that she can use anywhere that accepts that particular credit card.
If your friend is a coffee lover, a gift card from her favorite coffee shop is a no-brainer. Tuck it into one of those funny or cute mugs she loves or a new travel cup to replace the one she’s been carrying for way too long. Add one of those little expensive chocolates and she has a sweet treat to get her through the day. Or if she grinds her own coffee, buy a bag of her favorite blend and tape the gift card to the back. A gift bag and a little tissue paper finishes it off.
Music and movies are great last minute gifts. Wrapping an iTunes gift card in a cd jewel case isn’t a new idea, but it is a quick and easy solution to almost forgetting a birthday present. A movie theater or movie rental store card packaged with a DVD of one her favorite flicks is another. Add a package of microwave popcorn and you are done. A bookstore card fits nicely into a distinctive journal or gift book of favorite poetry or humor.
Just because you remembered your best friend’s birthday at the last minute doesn’t mean she has to know it. Choosing a gift card as a present doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t have time to shop, even if you didn’t. It is the presentation and the packaging that shows this gift was well thought out and given from the heart, even if it was purchased on the fly.
